Life is precious. We may not be aware of it as we tromp around in our Osh Kosh B’Gosh, but as we age this notion is far more apparent. Each day signifies a new milestone in your life. Never thought about that, did you? If you feel like your on autopilot and aren’t fully present on your daily life…
It’s time to snap out of it!
Here are a few tips to re-energize your life and help you make the most out of your time here on Earth.
If you’re out for dinner with friends, don’t let your mind wander to something that happened earlier that day or will happen next week. If you’re watching a movie and you get a phone call, answer it later. Your full attention is the most valuable gift that you can give to any moment, no matter if you’re alone or with others, and doing so will allow you to fully enjoy them.
2. Inspire Yourself
Read a few pages from your favorite book.
Start your day off by reading a list of encouraging quotes.
Watch a short TED talk.
Dance and sing like a maniac to your favorite song that you’ll never admit to liking.
Regardless of the medium you choose, do something everyday day to inspire yourself, even if its only a small amount. The positive energy and invigoration you get from these simple acts will spread into your interactions with other throughout the day and give you a more optimistic outlook on life.
We’re now living in a world where being connected all the time isn’t just the norm – it’s expected. From e-mail, text message, Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Facetime, there are hundreds of ways to make sure you’re never more than a few seconds away from someone all the way across the globe. While technology has enhanced our lives in many ways, it comes at the price of always “on”, constantly being distracted by or anticipating incoming stimulus. Designate a period of time during your day where you shut down the computer, turn off the phone and enjoy the serenity. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try this for an entire day.
4. Kick Yourself
Don’t worry, there’s no pain required here.
In the movie Inception, a “kick” is a technique used to bring someone out of the dream world and back to reality. Luckily for us, this technique can be used in our non-movie star lives as well. Start by writing down 2-3 things that you go into autopilot mode for – do you check your email first thing in the morning immediately after rolling out of bed? What about taking the same route to work or engaging in the same weekend activities?
When you find yourself slipping into these moments of routine action, kick yourself and switch it up; do something completely different that actively engages your mind, opening you up to new possibilities that you may not have noticed before.
Nothing gives us as humans more intrinsic pleasure than to have a positive impact on another person’s life, and there are a myriad of ways that we can do this, both big and small. The next time you interact with a stranger, give them a genuine compliment. Give your time or money to a charity that you support. Listen to someone without interrupting. Offer to help a friend with something that they’ve been struggling with. At any given moment, think of how you can add the most value to the situation you’re in and take action.
