Feeling stressed out? It may be your first instinct to grab those comfort foods, but many healthy foods have stress reducing properties that outweigh the comfort of junk food.

Boost your mood with dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants known as flavonoids, which aid in relaxation, prevent memory decline, and boost mood.

Sip green tea

Green tea contains similar antioxidants as dark chocolate, but also have a unique amino acid called theanine. Theanine is known to calm your mind and increase concentration. It also helps you sleep better and wake feeling rested.

Boost serotonin with oats

Oatmeal increased the brain’s production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter manufactured in your body by the amino acid tryptophan. It’s known to produce a happy feeling and helps keep your mood under control.

Vitamin C boost

Citrus is high in vitamin C, an antioxidant known to help control cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone secreted in your body when you experience high levels of stress and anxiety. It’s good to have, but can be dangerous if you are constantly secrete cortisol because you always feel under stress. High cortisol levels can lead to chronic stress and stores in belly fat. Vitamin C is also known to aid in blood pressure regulation.

Omega-3 rich

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can calm anxiety and help maintain healthy cortisol levels as well. Because omega-3 fatty acids play a critical role in the development and function of the central nervous system, researchers think fish increasing omega-3 in the diet may help reduce symptoms of depression.
